Asia
My Asian paintings are strongly influenced by Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand. Rich landscapes, rice fields, mountains, volcanoes, beaches, flora and fauna (the monkeys!) and religious (Hindu and Buddhist) ceremonies all contribute to an atmosphere of high creativity. Every person is an artist, carver, painter, musician, or story teller. The people themselves are works of art…the best models.
The history of Cambodian art stretches back centuries to ancient crafts. But, the opus grande of Cambodia is the Angkor Wat temple complex. The site is breath taking (first from a hot air balloon and then on the back of an elephant!) Multiple bas reliefs of the Apsara, celestial consorts of the kings, were intriguing. Wall carvings of the stories of the Khmer people provided hours of intrigue and drawing.
Thai art is primarily Buddhist and sculpture usually depicts the Buddha. My Grand Palace is an impression of the painted ornamentation of the palace. Buddha images are elegant with sinuous bodies and slender oval faces. This style emphasizes the spiritual aspect of Buddha, omitting many small anatomical details. My Buddhas loosely draw from this period.
